ROSE GARDEN TEA ROOM

Surrounded on all sides by lush gardens, three distinct rooms were created- one for each garden that surrounds the 1909 structure- The Tea Room to the north of the Rose Garden, the Herb room to the east of the Herb Garden and the Shakespeare outdoor pavilion situated within the Shakespeare Garden.

Improvements included bringing the building to 21st-century standards, overhauling the commercial kitchen, constructing a brand new patio (called the Shakespeare Pavilion) and indoor dining area (called the Herb Room), creating a lobby area, and repositioning the building’s entrance.

CLARK LIBRARY

Seismic Upgrade and Book Storage Expansion to 1926 Historic Clark Library owned by UCLA and houses rare books and manuscripts such as Shakespeare folios and extensive Oscar Wilde collection.

The project entailed seismic and accessibility upgrades, the expansion and modernization of storage, office, and classroom facilities, and the restoration of decorative features.

The scope included a new pavilion that was carefully designed to be compatible with, yet subservient to the 1926 library.-

Seismic strengthening involved center core-drilling of brick to maintain the interior and exterior walls intact.

  • 16,920 sq ft. renovation
  • 430 sq ft new pavilion

Sustainability measures include:

  • Meets the performance objectives of Southern California Edison's Savings By Design program, using 18% less energy than the current code allows.
  • Loggias serve as circulation spaces, minimizing the amount of air-conditioned interior space.
  • Windows are shaded by loggias, trellises, and deep wall recesses, reducing the heat load.
  • Skylights and windows use energy-efficient glass.
  • Air handlers and air distribution systems are energy efficient.
  • Day lighting is available throughout the interiors.
  • Lighting and light control systems are energy efficient.
  • Chilled water is created on site, providing enhanced energy efficiency.
  • Plumbing systems are water efficient.
  • Water runoff is collected in a system of underground perforated pipes that enables runoff to percolate into the ground.
  • Plants in the gardens are low water use.
  • Light-colored paving reduces heat absorption in the hardscape areas.

THE LINDE CENTER

Adaptive Reuse of the historic Astrophysics Building into the Center for Global Environmental Studies. The 1932 structure designed by Mayers, Murray & Phillip, (formerly Goodhue Associates - the architect responsible for many of the buildings on Caltech's predominantly Mission-style Pasadena campus), now serves as a model of energy efficiency.

Modernization and seismic upgrade of 40,000 sq ft, 2 floors above with 3-sub basements. Linde Center is the first laboratory in the U.S. to receive LEED Platinum certification in an historic building.
